8 Completely Free Things to Do in Copenhagen
One of the most expensive cities in the World on a budget? Is it even possible?
Copenhagen is my favorite city in Europe and I come back here as often as I can. Being an inclusive and open-minded city, Copenhagen attracts lots of visitors from all over the World. However, traveling in the city can be very costly. Over the years, I stumbled upon plenty of completely free things to do in Copenhagen! Here I come with a list of 8 my favorite and free places to discover in Copenhagen.
1. Botanic Garden
A green land covered by thousands of different species of plants is located in the heart of Copenhagen. It is a perfect place to stay away from the chaos and reconnect with the Nature. The Botanic Garden covers over 10 hectares including 27 glasshouses, plenty of pathways with blooming flowers, a lake and cafes. It was designed to give Danes a moment of peace and relaxation. I like to come here, when the sun is shining in Denmark, lay down on the grass, read books and drink my favorite coffee.
2. Six Forgotten Giants
Looks scary? Maybe a little bit, but 6 Forgotten Giants bring so much fun 😉
Built from recycled woods, they are hidden in green forest, on the beach and meadows. To find them, you need to follow the map and the path. This off the beaten track spot in Copenhagen is a great opportunity to discover the Danish countryside and spend time outdoor.
3. Blooming Trees
One time of the year, Copenhagen turns into this pinkish land covered by cherry blossoms. I love the time of the year! But who doesn’t?
Where to find cherry blossoms in Copenhagen? There are few spots in the city but my favorite one is the Bispebjerg Kirkegård! If you want to beat the crowds, go there early in the morning to take some great pictures!
4. Christiania
Christiania in Copenhagen. The semi-autonomous, hippie free-town is being the most interesting attraction located in the heart of Denmark’s capital. Always colorful and extraordinary. Best known for its vibrant communities way of life and controversial Cannabis Trade Center. But also it is a green oasis, where lots of Danish like to come here at the weekend.
5. Explore the Danish coastline
When the sunny days come to Copenhagen, you can find me on the coast. And probably the rest of residents too 🙂 So, let’s get clear here first.
Even the tiniest hint of spring in Denmark is something to celebrate and truly enjoy. Every sunbeam, brings people outdoors for jogging, family biking, strolling and sitting outside the cafes. All beaches are open to the public, so plan your day to hunt some treasures on the cost!
6. Discover colors of Scandinavian streets
I love everything about streets in Copenhagen! So colorful, vibrant and climatic. But let’s start from the beginning.
Have you ever wonder why all these buildings in Old Town are pained in different bright colors? Well, Scandinavian winter brings short and dark days. Sunless months, low temperature and streets covered by snow or rain…it can be though even for locals.
Houses painted in all colors of the rainbow, helped residents to survive the winter time. Today, filled with small cozy cafes, restaurants, vintage shops and local souvenir stores, light up the city and bring joy.
7. Elephant Gate
Being a part of the Carlsberg Brewery, Elephant Gate is one of the most recognizable sculptures in the city. The entrance contains four life-size granite elephants, symbolise Carl’s Jacobsen four surviving children, but also a symbol of loyalty and strength. It is said that he was inspired by Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s obelisk-carrying elephant on the Piazza della Minerva in Rome.
8. Green Parks
When thinking about the last point on my list, I couldn’t resist to add one of my favorite aspects about the city.
Why do I feel so good in Copenhagen? Because even, Copenhagen is very lively and busy city, it gives an access to plenty of open spaces and public parks.
My favorite places are The King’s Garden with 400-year-old Rosenborg Castle and Ørstedsparken.
Lie down on the grass, watch the clouds and enjoy the sun in Copenhagen!
