If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next urban vacation, it’s hard to do much better than Dublin. The lovely Irish capital may not be a far-flung getaway or an off-the-map destination, but it’s a place where you can take a break from the day-to-day and dive into history, culture, and beauty.
I do recommend that if you plan such a trip you keep an eye on the Irish government’s updates on travel regulations, just in case. Because unfortunately we travelers still aren’t out of the woods regarding COVID. Provided you have the option of going though, here are some of the best adventures and activities you can enjoy in Dublin.
1. Have a Drink at The Temple Bar
This is one of the most iconic bars in all of Dublin (which is saying something, since there are quite a few pubs and bars in the city!). Indeed, tourists visit the Temple Bar from all over the world, both for sightseeing and to enjoy a drink. The bar dates back to the early 1300s, and is still famous today because of its historical red exterior and reputation as a vital pub crawl stop. If you’re looking for a glass of strong Irish whiskey, this is definitely a stop for you.
2. Tour (and have another drink at) The Guinness Storehouse
If whiskey isn’t your thing, The Guinness Storehouse factory might make for a good alternative. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland, located in St. James’ Gate Brewery. A tour takes you through seven floors showcasing the history of the Guinness family and how their world-famous beer is crafted. At the end of the tour, you get to enjoy a glass of their famous stout while admiring the Dublin skyline. And if you happen to go during the holidays, you may be able to enjoy their Guinness Winterfest celebration as well.
3. Check Out the Books at the Trinity College Library
It may not sound like an adventure in the traditional sense, but rest assured, visiting this library feels like stepping into a fantasy realm. The Trinity College Library is the biggest library in Ireland, and one of the most stunning in the entire world. It’s beautiful, rustic, and extremely well taken care of – a heart- warming sight for any bookworm. Do note that while the main library is open to staff, graduates, and current students of the university exclusively, tourists are still welcome to see the Old Library.
4. Play Some Games at the Bingo Hall
Bingo may sound like an odd way to spend your time, but in Dublin the experience is truly becoming unique –– like a window into past entertainment. In the past decade or so, bingo’s migration to online casino arcades has resulted in significant transformation of the game for European players. Numerous sites now host bingo rooms with pop culture and musical themes that make them livelier for gamers. Additionally, Foxy Games’ Slingo section has done much to popularize a whole different spin on the game in which digital slot machines are used to fill out bingo cards. It is these sorts of arcades that largely define bingo today. But at Dublin’s National Stadium Bingo, you can enjoy classic bingo the way it was played in decades past. Games start at 8:15pm every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and you’ll play with a big, enthusiastic crowd. There’s something quite refreshing about it as a social activity (not to mention a fun way to mingle with locals!).
5. Hike in the Wicklow Mountains
You simply have to hit some city attractions like the ones above if you’re visiting Dublin. But if you’re looking to get out of the city and back into nature, be sure to check out the Wicklow Mountains. Best known to many these days as the filming location for P.S. I Love You, this mountain range is ultimately even more gorgeous than it appears to be on screen. It’s a wonderful place for a leisurely hike, and will surely be one of the highlights of your trip.
6. Kitesurf on Dollymount Strand
Yes, Dublin is a tad chilly for watersport. But this is one of the best kitesurfing spots in all of Europe! It’s a long beach with shallow, flat water and suitable winds most every day. The air above the water is often filled with colorful kites these days, as word has gotten out about how great a spot it is. If you know what you’re doing, or you’d like to learn, give it a try!
7. Rock Climb in Dalkey Quarry
If land-based adventure is more your speed, let’s get you climbing instead! The Dalkey Quarry offers rock climbing on a wide variety of routes that cater to every type of climber –– from beginner to advanced. And the best part is that it’s not far from the city itself. You can pack up gear and take just a 30 – minute DART ride to this striking quarry, and be climbing in no time.
8. Walk the Streets at Night
It may not be a specific recommendation, but it’s one you should take to heart! After all, Dublin made our list of romantic destinations in Europe in part because of the charms of the streets (particularly during Christmas time!). Plan a safe route through a well-lit area in the main city, and it will be one of the highlights of your visit. Whether for a bit of casual exploration, some cultural attractions, or a more wide-ranging adventure, Dublin ought to be an item on just about everyone’s travel list.
