5 Top Places to Visit in Jaisalmer
In search of a getaway place, unlike any other?
Inhale the scent of Indian incense and desert mystery. Welcome to Jaisalmer, one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful destinations!
Known as the ”Golden City”, Jaisalmer is located in the middle of the Great Indian Desert. The history of Jaisalmer dates back to early 12th century, when the Rawal Jaisal found this golden land.
Arriving in Jaisalmer feels like stepping back in time. There are many things to do in town and an adventure awaits you at every corner! I would like to share with you a list of 5, my favorite places to visit in Jaisalmer.
1. Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort is located in the heart of Jaisalmer. It is probably the most visited tourist attraction is town. Proudly standing amidst the golden desert, the fort is like no other place on Earth. It is made of huge sandstone, which perfectly blend with the sand of the Thar desert.
Unlike any other fort in India, the Jaisalmer fort is still a living urban centre. It is said that only 4000 residents live there, so you can really feel the local atmosphere and Indian vibes. The dizzying market is full of handicraft stores which sell very unique products like bags, tablecloths, fabrics and other souvenirs.
To learn more about Jaisalmer’s culture and cuisine, get your lunch in one of many rooftop restaurants located inside the fort. You will not only get a chance to try delicious Indian dishes, but also meet residents or even owners. They are very welcoming people and curious about travelers. If you are traveling solo, it is not possible that you will eat alone 😉 Because of the uniqueness and incredible views, rooftop restaurants are truly recommended places to visit in Jaisalmer!
Jaisalmer is home to Jain temples, havelis and the Raj Mahal palace, the biggest proud of the golden fort. When wandering along the narrow streets, try to find the ”battle gun” spot, which provides an incredible view over the city.
2. Thar Desert
If you are in the mood for an unforgettable adventure, take your traveling to the next level!
Go for a camel safari tour and sleep under the stars in the desert of Rajasthan. It is definitely the most popular tourist attraction in Jaisalmer.
The desert is a place where silence suits well. Where being present is the only thing I had in my mind. The sky was so clear that night and I couldn’t stop staring at the galaxy. Learning about how people live in the desert and being a part of the desert family for 2 days was so real experience.
There are many tour operators in town, so I suggest to check and compare the prices in few places. I can recommend the Abu Safari company. Remember to take with you comfortable clothes and shoes. Riding a camel in a hot day is quite uncomfortable after some time, but completely worth it!
3. Patwa-ki-haveli
A wide range of spectacular havelis in Jaisalmer show its rich history and heritage.
Havelis in India are traditionally carved sandstone mansions with outstanding balconies, stone jalis and chajjas. Located near Patwa Complex, Patwa-ki-haveli is an architectural masterpiece of this place. It is one of the largest and most recognizable havelis in Rajasthan.
The construction was built by Jain brothers. And, it took over 50 years to create it. The impressive combination of 5 sections is something uniquely Indian and one of the places to visit in Jaisalmer that will stay with you forever!
4. Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake is one of the best spots to see sunrise in Jaisalmer. This picturesque lake with ”floating” temples on it, just makes you feel like a fairy tale. Built in the 14th century by Maharawal Gads, Gadisar Lake is encircled by historic architecture. I couldn’t get enough of this excellent setting. I spent here one beautiful morning, wondering around small temples, observing residents and listening to the sound of birds.
5. Bada Bagh
Bada Bagh is another attraction in Jaisalmer that stole my heart!
It literally means big garden and it is located 15min away from Jaisalmer. It is well known place in Jaisalmer, as it has a series of cenotaphs carved with images of the royal rulers of Jaisalmer. This excellent setting during the golden hour take the breath away.
