With all the places to see in Mexico, it’s no wonder why it’s world’s most popular vacation destination.
Mexico is a country of contrasts. It is home to remarkable cities, incredible islands, tropical beaches, ancient ruins and tropical wildlife. Here is a list of the 10 top-rated attractions in Mexico, that you have to explore to experience the best of Mexico’s tourism!
1. Hierve el Agua
Visiting the spectacular Hierve el Agua tops many people’s travel bucket list, making it a very popular attraction in Mexico.
Hierve el Agua is a geological phenomenon in the heart of the Oaxaca state of Mexico. I travelled all the way from Guatemala to see this natural wonder with my own eyes. A 24h bus ride took forever but you know what? It was completely worth it!
Hierve el Agua is a natural rock formation created by mineral water runoff. The ”petrified waterfall” and natural pools overlooking the green mountains of the valley look absolutely stunning! This place left me speechless.
2. Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is undoubtedly one of the most visited tourist attractions in Mexico. This Mayan archeological site is located in Yucatán Peninsula and it’s one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Chichén Itzá was the political and religious center of Maya peoples ruled by Toltec and today it’s considered as the major example of both the Mayan and Toltec civilizations in Yucatán. I recommend to show up here early in the morning before the crowds. Some travellers prefer to do the opposite and come late in the day. I reckon both strategies may help you escape the crowds!
3. Archeological Zone of Tulum
Once a small fishing village, Tulum has become a glamorous destination with its turquoise Caribbean waters, instagram-worthy white sand beaches, posh resorts, yoga retreats and chic cafes. Today, the most-visited tourist attraction in Tulum is the archeological zone of Tulum, located just next to the Caribbean Sea – it’s fantastic!
The ancient walled city of Tulum was one of the primary ports for the Mayan civilization, where various products were traded. Step back into Mayan time and imagine the extensive trade network.
4. The day of dead in Oaxaca
I reckon the dia de los Muertos is the most famous holidays in Mexico. However, in Oaxaca region, the Mexico’s artistic heartland, the celebration is the most spectacular, but also very intense spiritual experience! The day of dead is a 3-day celebration, when Mexicans welcome the souls of their dead loved ones. These days are accompanied by prayers, art, colorful costumes, music and special fo0d.
5. The tiny paradise of Isla Holbox
Home to stunning beaches, incredible array of wildlife, eco friendly hotels and natural scenery, Isla Holbox is quickly becoming the new hot destination in Mexico. You”ll find here plenty of attractions from paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling to thrilling adventures, like swimming with whale sharks. It is one of the places in Mexico, where you can connect with nature and slow down, but also have some great activities and fun!
6. Zona Arqueológica Palenque
A trip to Chiapas wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Zona Arqueológica Palenque. These impressive ruins of a Mayan city dating back to 226BC. The area is surrounded by dense jungle, making it a truly mystical place. Mexico’s other well known ruins of Chichen Itza or Uxmal are more popular attractions, but Palenque has been constantly called by many the most beautiful Mayan site in Mexico. I recommend to hire a guide to know better the site’s interesting history and you won’t miss any hidden treasures!
7. Xcaret Park
Filled with endless cultural attractions, art exhibitions, water activities and vibrant shows, Xcaret is an amusement park dedicated to rich Mexican culture and nature. Undoubtedly, it is the hottest spot on the map of Cancun and Riviera Maya! If you have a limited time in Mexico, this is a good place to be. You can explore the Mayan archaeological vestiges, see the Mexican dances, try Mexican food and swim in underground rivers, relax on white sand beaches and more at one place!
8. Sacred cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula
When you’re here in Yucatan Peninsula, you feel the spirit’s of the ancient Maya people. It is a region of tropical rainforests, jungles and my favorite mystical cenotes – created thousands of years ago, secret freshwater pools where Maya held ceremonies and talked with Gods.
Some of my favorite ones are Zaci and Suytun cenotes located in Valladolid. Swimming in a cenote is not only so refreshing but it is also a very mystical experience.
9. Agua Azul Waterfalls
Hidden deep in the verdant jungle, Agua Azul is one of the most impressive natural attractions in Mexico. It is a beautiful set of massive waterfalls cascading into turquoise natural pools. You can enjoy the walk upstairs along the falls and see the water flows from totally different angles!
10. Yucatan’s pink salt lakes
Pink lagoon – another fairy-tale like landscape in Mexico!
Las Coloradas is an Instagrammer’s dream attraction located in the Yucatán Peninsula. Wonder why the water is so pink? The pink lagoon gets it’s unique color from plankton and brine shrimps. Today, these lakes are protected by security and swimming in the water is prohibited. Also, it is not allowed to explore it by yourself, only with a guide.
