Poombarai – the Kodaikanal’s Best Kept Secret
Country’s best kept secrets.
Hidden locations, little villages, secret beaches or spots set deep in the wildness. I am one of those, willing to explore them, rather than follow a well traveled path. Nothing gives you a real taste of local culture and authentic life than off the beaten track destinations.
On my latest trip to India, I was on the mission to find those still less visited places and I couldn’t be happier that I discovered the South Indian state.
After a long bus trip, I reached Kodaikanal, a place known as Princess of hill station. It is a dream destination, where the lakes, forest and green mountains come together to create a truly unique setting for nature lovers.
I would like to share with you a story about the Kodaikanal’s best kept secret, which I discovered one beautiful day, while riding a motorbike.
Poombarai is a small colorful village sitting in the middle of Palani hills in the state of Tamil Nadi. Hugged by peaceful green hills, Poombarai offers spectacular views of green terraced fields. It is famous for its production of carrots, cabbage and garlic, which are the main sources of village income.
It is set at 1920 meters above sea level, so you can enjoy the cool breeze here. The pleasant weather conditions and a very low number of tourists, are making this place a great hiking spot.
The agricultural community is very welcoming. Nobody doesn’t speak a word of English, but don’t worry, hand gestures and miming work well 😉 There are hardly 1,100 households here and most residents are farmers. I am not going to lie, once you get here, you will be the center of attention.
Take time to wander around the town and absorb the authentic local vibes. While walking along the main street, you can observe how people live and how looks a typical day in Poombarai.
This is a year-round destination, on account of its good weather conditions thought the whole year. I visited Poombarai in November, and while it was one of the coldest moths in this area, I found the cold weather very relaxing and refreshing.
From the mysterious fog and cool breeze to the shining sun at blue sky, the weather can change in seconds or minutes here.
