9 Breathtakingly Beautiful Places to Visit in Alberta
I was lucky enough to explore Alberta’s most beautiful places during my road trip, this year.
Each new road brought tears, gasps and pleasure. I loved the sense of freedom and independence this trip gave me. I admired the endless landscapes overlooking the mountains, lakes and snow capped peaks.
Alberta has some of the most spectacular natural wonders in Canada. Each place made me both speechless and in awe. Here is a list of 9 breathtakingly beautiful places to visit in Alberta.
1. Drumheller
I came here all the way from Calgary to see this natural wonder, I always wanted to see.
This is Alberta’s best kept secret! Hoodoo is basically a sandstone pillar resting on a thick base of shale. Hoodoos take millions of years to form. I came here all the way from Calgary to see this natural wonder and it was absolutely worth it!
Fun fact: The iconic scene from ”Life is a Highway” was shot in Hoodoos! You can see Tom Cochrane dancing with his guitar in between those Hoodoos.
2. Athabasca Glacier
I explored the Athabasca Glacier, a part of the grand Columbia Icefield on the way to Jasper. It was bathed in sunshine and it just blew me away. With its epic landscapes, snow capped peaks and fresh crisp air, the Athabasca Glacier has become one of my favorite places in Jasper National Park.
3. Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes, surreal place I have experienced during my latest road trip in Banff National Park. Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake, so it means that the impossibly turquoise waters of the lake will never fade. Glacial lakes are formed through the process of glacial erosion and the blue color is a result of formation process.
4. Canmore
I would say that Canmore is Banff’s little sister nestled in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.
It is a picturesque mountain town and a gateway to some of the best hikes in Kananaskis country. With its relaxed alpine atmosphere, breathtaking scenery, rich history, outdoor adventure and unique accommodation, Canmore become my favorite town in Alberta.
5. Red Rock Canyon
Unbelievably beautiful piece of nature!
Red Rock Canyon is a place to explore, when visiting Waterton Lakes National Park. It’s a spectacular natural treasure made of red and green rock layers of bedrock. There is a 0,7km loop that offers jaw-dropping views from the top.
6. Grassi Lakes
I remember the moment…I was standing on the rock and pinching myself in disbelief how such beautiful places even exist. Grassi lakes is one of the most popular hikes in Kananaskis region. It is still less traveled, quite easy, a half-day hike located near Canmore.
I just loved everything about this place. Waterfalls, spectacular views, but the most important two crystal clear turquoise lakes that stole my heart!
7. Wedge Pond
Kananaskis country turned out to be one of the most epic highlights of my trip in Alberta. Still remote and absolutely outstanding. It is home to some of the most outstanding places in Alberta and Wedge Pond is one of them!
This shallow pot lake is a perfect spot for those seeking relaxation and a connection with nature. The water is crystal clear and it creates a lovely mirror-like reflection.
8. Mistaya Canyon
Another stunning place located in Kananaskis Country!
Mistaya Canyon is located just right off Icefield Parkway road, just 1,5h drive from Banff. I admire it for it’s unique rocky formation, breathtaking views and tranquil atmosphere!
9. Horseshoe Canyon
Some places are made of magic and this is one of them!
Horseshoe Canyon is located just 17 km west of Drumheller. Come here at sunset to admire these colorful layers of rock bathed in sunshine. The Horseshoe Canyon as well as Hoodoos are internationally recognized highlights of the Alberta badlands.
